The North Face Diablo Down Jacket (men’s)

TNF Diablo down jacket

by Tony Lourens

There has and always will be two camps with regards to down and synthetic filling for garments and sleeping bags. I own and use both and I feel there is a place for both in the market, but it is hard to beat the warmth, soft comfort and cuddle factor of a good down jacket (or sleeping bag). I have had many down jackets over the years, but I must say, I am seriously impressed with the Diablo – it ticks all the warm, comfortable, soft and cuddly boxes. You just have to slip it on and you will know what I’m talking about.

Stuffed with 700-fill, which is regarded as relatively high up the down-fill scale, the Diablo creates instant warmth, even if you only have a single base layer beneath it. Obviously, used with a light fleece, it would be super effective in wintery conditions in the ’Berg and the wild peaks of the Western Cape.

Manufactured from ripstop fabric and reinforced along the upper arms and shoulders, the Diablo is a hardy jacket that will endure many a cold journey in the mountains. The full length zip baffle and the adjustable hem, coupled with a low apron which covers your buttocks, all add to locking in the warmth and keeping the cold air at bay. And the high neck closure (with fleecy tongue) all the way up to your chin and elasticated cuffs, ensure even more warmth and insulation.

The Diablo is breathable and has quite an effective DWR (durable water repellent) finish, which will stave off light moisture, keeping you warm and dry in light and short bouts of precipitation. The garment is also fitted with two fleece-lined pockets to keep your hands toasty, and a very handy inside chest pocket for stashing your phone, snack bar and the like.

And very importantly, TNF is certified by the Responsible Down Standard (RDS). The RDS aims to ensure that down and feathers come from animals that have not been subjected to any unnecessary harm. The standard is used to reward and influence the down and feather industry to incentivise practices that respect the humane treatment of ducks and geese. This down fill comes from a small number of birds kept for breeding purposes throughout the year. These geese moult naturally in the spring. While their down is loose, it is collected by hand.

While the Diablo is superbly aligned for winter trips in our mountains, it is also stylishly designed and not too puffy, so is also great for urban use during the colder months, here in South Africa and also for a European ski holiday.
