For many South African climbers, Yosemite has always existed as a two‑dimensional dream, glimpsed through grainy Stone Masters footage, or the polished frames of modern documentaries. We grew up on stories of El Capitan and Half Dome, but the reality of almost three weeks in the Valley – especially for a group of seven South Africans – was far less cinematic. It was a high‑altitude comedy of errors, stitched together with camaraderie, commitment, and very real consequences.
The spark was simple: Willem was turning fifty. He decided the only acceptable way to mark the milestone was to entice a few friends to travel halfway across the world to climb in the granite mecca – Yosemite Valley.
