It is with great shock and sadness that we learnt of the untimely passing of Voytek Modrzewski in a freak drowning accident off the coast of Portland Bill, in the south of England on Saturday 25 July 2020. The news is that he was climbing at Portland and swam out to rescue his hat that blew into the sea and got into trouble. Unfortunately the rescuers were unable to revive him.
I remember Voytek well from the late 1990s, when he started climbing. He was always so enthusiastic and passionate about the mountains and his climbing. He was a colourful character to be sure and made great inroads into his climbing career. He was also one of the original Speedwing pilots here in SA.
Another one of our brothers taken so early in life. Voytek was only 42 and is survived by his wife, Tamem Richa and their daughter, Tallulah.
Our deepest and most heartfelt condolences to them, the rest of his family and friends.
RIP Voytek, you will be remembered by all of us as the wonderful, kind, passionate and loving person that you were.
