The 10th edition of the Black Diamond Tradathon finally made its way to the Eastern Cape. Morgan Bay, with its balmy mid-winter days, ample accommodation and incredible sea cliff climbing simply outclassed the other contenders to host this year’s event. Those in the know will tell you it wasn’t an easy choice, because of the region’s multitude of great trad climbing spots. But the convenient logistics sealed the deal in the end.
As always, the BD team put a superb event together. Evenings included a screening of South African Climbing films by Garrreth Bird, a talk on Eastern Cape climbing, some enviable merchandise giveaways, and the much-anticipated trad-rack raffle, whilst the days were devoted to the staggering climbing on the dolerite cliffs overlooking the Indian Ocean. This year’s raffle went home with Bianca. A true testament to perseverance, Bianca and her partner Duncan are the only people who have been to every Tradathon since its inception. Even the organising team couldn’t beat that record. As the saying goes, ‘You’ve got to be in it to win it.’
